Is Victoria running out of housing?

Greater Victoria's vacancy rate has sat below 1.5% for most of the last three years. The pipeline is finally turning over: about 4,400 units are under construction across the region as of May 2026, the highest figure in twenty years. Most of that supply is rental, most of it is in the Westshore, and most of it is years from move-in. Short version: things will get better — slowly — and only if council approvals keep moving.

What's the best neighbourhood for a family?

If you want public schools at the top end of the provincial rankings, you're looking at Oak Bay or Cordova Bay. If you want to walk your kids to school, the park, and a café in the same trip, Fernwood or Fairfield are the right answer. If you want a yard and a driveway, the Saanich peninsula or Gordon Head will give you more for the same money. Note that "the same money" in Victoria starts well above $1.1M for a detached house in any of these.

When do the cherry blossoms bloom?

Victoria's blossom season runs roughly from the first week of March to mid-April. The early bloomers (Okame, Whitcomb) start in Beacon Hill Park and along the Dallas Road waterfront. The big-show Akebono and Kanzan come a few weeks later — Government Street, Cook Street Village, and the Uplands. Peak is usually around the third week of March. Bring a coat anyway; we're still on the Pacific.

If the weather holds: start Saturday with a walk along Dallas Road, head to Whistle Buoy for the Big Patio Days launch, and end at the Symphony's outdoor opener at Cathedral Square if you can swing it. Sunday is Open Studios Fernwood — twenty-eight artists across walkable side streets. Pace yourself.

Is the Johnson Street Bridge still broken?

The bridge has stuck open three times since the start of 2024. The most recent was May 3, 2026 — a heat-related sensor fault that pinned the deck up for 38 minutes during the Saturday morning rush. The City is part-way through a full control-system replacement; commissioning is scheduled for July 2026. Whether that ends the run of failures is the question.

For long sessions: Parsonage's garden tables are quiet by 10am, outlets are plentiful, the espresso is real. Hey Happy on Blanshard runs at a steady tempo — good light, fast wifi, ceiling-volume music. Caffe Fantastico's Cook Street store has a back room nobody talks about; bring a sweater, the AC runs cold.

How long is the ferry to Vancouver?

BC Ferries' main run is Swartz Bay (Saanich Peninsula) to Tsawwassen (south of Vancouver). The crossing itself is 1h 35m; allow 30–60m of arrival and unload time on either end. Helijet (downtown to downtown) is 35 minutes door-to-door but books like an airline. Harbour Air's seaplane is the prettiest 35 minutes you'll spend.
