Sidney's lanterns come out Saturday night, and they walk from Beacon Park to the pier
A week of glowing installations around town ends with a parade down the waterfront, live music at the bandshell, and memory lanterns you can dedicate to someone you've lost.
The Salish Sea Lantern Festival returned to Sidney on Saturday, August 22nd, running 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. before the lantern procession closed out the night.
Since August 16th, lantern installations have gone up around the community, and residents built their own through workshops, online tutorials, and free kits handed out by local retailers. The festival itself opened with face painting, temporary tattoos, and time to take in the costumes, followed by a welcome from municipal reps at 7 p.m. and Daniel Cook and the Radiators at 7:15.
Food vendors and a craft tent rounded out the evening. Memory lanterns were available for purchase, each one dedicated to a favourite memory, a beloved pet, or someone special.
The parade began at the Bandshell in Beacon Park, moved along the Sidney Waterfront Walkway, and finished in Eastview Park by the walking pier, with large-scale lanterns and costumed characters along the route.
