Central Saanich turns 75, and it wants your car left at home

Free shuttles, a bike valet, and a giant birthday cake are all lined up for Centennial Park on July 25.

Central Saanich is throwing itself a 75th birthday party on Saturday, July 25, at Centennial Park in Saanichton, from noon to 8 p.m.

The district would rather you didn't drive. It's partnered with BC Transit to run a free accessible shuttle stopping at five points about every 30 minutes, starting at 11:30 a.m., with the last bus leaving the park at 8:15 p.m. Capital Bike is also running a free valet at the basketball court, where you can stash a bike, scooter, stroller or bag for a numbered claim tag.

Expect road changes if you do drive. Hovey Road closes between East Saanich Road and the park, on-site parking is limited to Wallace Drive and one lot, and overflow parking sits at Stelly's Secondary, where you can catch the shuttle or walk in along Tomlinson Road.

The day itself has live local music, a food truck festival, a children's zone, classic car displays, a beer garden and that birthday cake. It lands the same summer neighbouring Saanich marks 120 years, a district Central Saanich split from back in 1951.
