Inner Harbour baby: public, police, and first responders help in surprise downtown delivery
A newborn, who is 15 days old today, will have a heck of a birthday story to tell when they’re old enough.
On Sept. 20—a Saturday—Const. Mandeep Sohi was on patrol at an event near Ship Point—the TC identified the function as the Soul of Vietnam—around 5:30 in the afternoon, when word came that a woman had gone into labour nearby and needed help.
Sohi looked around and found the woman “in active labour,” and quickly provided support to members of St. John Ambulance who were tending to her.
“It was a truly remarkable scene,” said Sohi. “One minute you’re ensuring public safety at an event, and the next you’re assisting in bringing a new life into the world.”
The St. John Ambulance workers, Sohi, and members of the public teamed up to help the woman safely deliver the baby before paramedics could arrive.
“This was a challenging situation requiring a rapid response and compassionate care,” said VicPD Staff Sgt. Shawn Robson, who commended the quick actions of the public and the professionalism of all first responders involved.
“Our priority was the health and well-being of the mother and her baby,” Robson said.
VicPD said the baby, whose sex was not disclosed, appeared healthy and that out of respect for the family, they would not be releasing further details at this time.
“These are the moments that remind us why we do this job; it’s incredibly humbling and rewarding,” Sohi said.
