I read a post on social media last night. It was the account of a Victoria woman and her husband who were in a restaurant—the sadness associated with helping their child move out of the nest that day was apparent on each of their faces. A stranger noticed they looked sad—then bought their meal.

New Michelle Remembers documentary explores the strange story that rocked Victoria—and the world
We cannot rely on our memories.
That’s the biggest takeaway filmmakers Steve J. Adams and Sean Horlor gained from their experience creating the documentary Satan Wants You, which follows the bizarre story of a Victoria book that launched a worldwide panic about Satanism.
The duo set out to tell the personal story of those at the centre of this conspiracy theory and how explosive rumours ripped through their families.
From memories as a child growing up in the Satanic panic of the ’80s in Victoria to the lasting consequences of these conspiracies, Adams and Horlor discuss lessons learned while creating the film—and why evidence matters.

Saanich to lose 46-year-old staple
A meat-lover’s go-to will soon be gone, and that’s going to leave many people with one fewer place to find delicious birthday or holiday gifts.
Maria’s Deli, at 4080 Shelbourne, is closing its doors at the end of the month. The delicatessen, home to meats, cheeses, and imported foods, has served Saanichites sandwiches and cuisine from abroad for close to five decades.
The owners recently announced on Facebook that the end of the month will be the end of the line.
“I’ll need to come by and see you,” wrote one cast-down customer. “Need to have that ricotta one more time and maybe some cold cuts lol. Sad about this. Good luck.”

Hullo cancels more sailings on its second day
Following the cancellation of its debut sailings yesterday due to overnight power outages and high winds, the Nanaimo-Vancouver ferry service scrubbed additional sailings Tuesday. The company also has reduced sailings for the remainder of August, down to two round trips a day. Those with tickets for the cancelled sailings will be refunded or their trips will be rebooked. Lemonade stand raises $900 for Victoria Hospitals Foundation
Eight-year-old Anders Lee raised funds by selling lemonade, cookies, and ice cream from his driveway. This is the second fundraising stand he has run this year, after raising $42 in March. Lee decided to give back to the foundation and hospital staff in honour of the anniversary of his father’s death. [CHEK]

Couples can tie the knot at this year’s festival, which will have its own city hall on the Royal Athletic Park grounds. You’ll need to book ahead and bring a marriage licence. [Victoria News]
